Atlanta Braves Prospect Reviews 2025: Luke Waddell

Luke was drafted by the Braves in the fifth round of the 2021 MLB draft out of THE Georgia Institute of Technology.

What were the expectations?

Entering his fifth year as a pro, Luke didn’t have too many expectations, especially after his 2024 season where he hit just .235/.317/.322 in 111 games for the Gwinnett Stripers. He was seen as a straight depth piece that offers some versatility with his ability to play both second and shortstop.

Results 2025

Although Luke battled an injury that forced him to miss a lot of time, 2025 was a strong year for him. During the season, Luke played in 91 games for the Stripers and hit a very respectable .272/.364/.340 in those games, good for a 98 wRC+. With offense not really being his calling card, being able to match a solid line while providing solid defense up the middle, Luke really gave the Braves organization a run for its money despite the injury issues. He rarely struck out (12% K%), ran at a good pace (12%) and found his MaxEV all the way to 109 MPH. Luke knows what he is: a gap-to-gap hitter without much power, but good contact skills and a better approach at the plate and he has seemingly put it all together in a pretty successful season.

What went well?

Almost everything went well for Luke. He provided almost exactly the level of play you expected, even exceeding expectations at the position and providing real depth for the Braves. He opened up the conversation about potentially finding himself on a Major League team because of his approach and ability to provide decent defense at both center positions.

An injury forced Luke to miss part of the season, limiting him to just 100 total appearances for the entire season, including rehab appearances.

Outlook for 2026

Think Luke will be in for more of the same in 2026 as he enters his age-27 season. He’s not a major league player, but he does provide value in the middle and gives you quality at-bats day in and day out. Although he is Rule 5 eligible, it’s unlikely the Braves will have to protect him in the draft, allowing him to enter his third season at Triple-A Gwinnett, where he hopefully avoids injuries and makes a bigger name for himself, with the potential to find some playing time with a Major League team in the future.
