Quick thoughts on a 101-70 win against Milwaukee:
How it happened
Indiana’s offense continued its early-season offense in the first half of Wednesday’s game against Horizon League favorite Milwaukee. The Hoosiers shot an impressive 60 percent from the field, including a 9-for-14 mark on 3-pointers, and put 51 points on the board. Indiana assisted on 14 of 18 field goals made. Three Hoosiers scored in double figures as Lamar Wilkerson had 15 points, Reed Bailey 12 and Tayton Conerway 11. IU scored an impressive 1.44 points per possession in the first 20 minutes.
However, defense was a problem. IU struggled to stop dribble penetration and allowed the Panthers, an opportunistic group on the offensive glass, to rebound 42 percent of their missed shots. To its credit, Milwaukee also made some tough shots. The Hoosiers, who led by as many as 15 points, went to the locker room down 51-39 after scoring the last five points of the first half.
Through the first eight minutes of the second half, Indiana struggled to shoot. The Hoosiers were just 3-for-9 from the field by the under-12 media timeout, but still led by 15 points due to their ability to get to the line. IU went 8-for-9 from the line through the first eight minutes of the second half.
IU’s first three-pointer of the second half came from Jasai Miles at the 10:53 mark to push the lead to 17 at 69-52. The lead was extended to 21 at 77-56 on a Tayton Conerway layup with 8:02 remaining. And by 4:07, the lead had increased to 27 points at 87-60 on a beautiful Conerway crossover and drive for a layup. The win, Indiana’s third straight to open the season, was another offensive clinic and blowout.
