The Houston Astros announced to reporters, including Chandler Rome of athleticsThat right -handed Luis Garcia underwent an elbow operation on Wednesday. That operation included a reconstruction of his ulnar collateral ligament, the procedure that is generally known as Tommy John surgery. It will be his second Tommy John operation in the past three years. The Flexorpses of the right side was also repaired this week.
Last month, the astros announced That Garcia would undergo a kind of elbow procedure, which would pitch in 2026. They did not give the details about that operation until today.
Friday’s update is not surprising, but offers some specificity about what there is for Garcia. Elleboog problems have been chasing him for several years now. He only made six starts in 2023 before he needed his first Tommy John operation. He was expected to return to the club in 2024, but repeatedly hit setbacks and eventually missed that entire season.
More setbacks came in 2025, and he only came back to the big league club until 1 September. He made a good start and threw six innings of three-run ball against the angels. But in his second outing in Toronto, he called the trainers in the second inning and left the game ominously. He was placed on the 15-day wounded list the next day because of the elbow discomfort. Only a few days later he was already in the 60-day IL. A few weeks later, the Astros already made it public that his 2026 was over.
What does the future have for Luis Garcia?
Garcia has just completed his second arbitration season. He can be kept for once again, but there is no reason for the Astros to offer him a contract because he will miss the year. They could theoretically work out a two -year deal. Nowadays it is quite common for a pitcher who is confronted with a long-term injury to get a two-year pact. The player gets some money to bank during rehabilitation. The team does not get a return on the first year, but hopes for sufficient production in the second year to justify the entire investment.
Whether Garcia can protect that kind of expenses is still to be seen. He has a strong track record, with a 3.60 run average in 359 2/3 big -class –innings, but there must be a lot of doubt about his future. Even if he is healthy in 2027 at a certain moment, he comes from four effectively lost years.
A probably scenario is that Garcia will be non-sorted or downright from the schedule in the coming weeks. He could then try to find a two -year deal with the Astros or another club. Astros fans may be familiar with the departure of José Urquidy. He needed an operation by Tommy John in June last year. The Astros kept him at the end of the end of the schedule and he became a free agent. He then signed with the Tigers, a one -year -old deal who paid him $ 1 million in 2025 with a club option of $ 4 million for 2026. Garcia could try to follow that path, but he should be less attractive for a signing club, because his operation takes place later in the year and his health history is worse.
