Manchester United Women traveled to Birmingham to take on Aston Villa in the Women’s Super League.
First half
Marc Skinner’s side started strongly and Ellen Wangerheim cut inside, but her shot went well over the top.
Melvine Malard was next to trouble the hosts, but her effort was well saved by Ellie Roebuck. United would soon be rewarded for their pressure as Julia Olme grabbed her second goal in a week.
The Swede took a turning corner that flew in straight over Roebuck’s head and scored straight from the set piece.
Skinner warned before the match that they should keep an eye on former player Kirsty Hanson, and he was proven right.
Moments later, Hanson caught the United defense as she cut inside and fired past Phallon Tullis-Joyce.
Olme reacted almost immediately, but her attempt was blocked. Seconds later, United’s American goalkeeper showed her worth with a brilliant save.
She showed off her athleticism by acrobatically repelling Maya Hijikata’s curling attempt.
Second half
The Red Devils started the second half at the top and wanted to regain the lead.
Lea Schuller was found in a wide space in the penalty area, but poor finishing saw the ball fly wide. Park had a sharp effort that was blocked by the Villa defense, but the visitors were not spared.
On 71 minutes, Hinata Miyazawa’s lovely ball into the penalty area was headed by Melvine Malard, and Wednesday hero Elisabeth Terland tucked the ball into the corner to give United the lead.
Just four minutes later, Jess Park secured the points. She carried the ball forward with confidence and fired past the Villa keeper with great power.
United were at it again on 79 minutes when Hanna Lundkvist was slotted in and her effort was deflected past Roebuck, and the Red Devils had four. Layla Drury, who scored last weekend, came on as a substitute for her competitive debut at the age of 16.
Tullis-Joyce made another fine save moments later before Olme lifted a volley over the net.
United saw out the match and their 4–1 win moved them up to fourth in the table, just one point behind Arsenal. They are now also only two points behind second-place Chelsea.
This Sunday they will welcome arch-rival Liverpool to the Progress with Unity Stadium.
