In January 2022, Barty became the first Australian woman since 1988 to win the Australian Open. She also won the Adelaide International before heading to Melbourne Park.
At the time, it was Barty’s third Grand Slam title and she had a fairly safe lead for the world No. 1 spot over the rest of the competition.
After making a dream start to 2025, Barty played no tournaments for the next two months. As the tennis public began to speculate about what was going on with the Australian – who was widely regarded as the best player in the game at the time – she made the shock announcement that she was retiring from tennis. It happened in March 2022, just before her 26th birthday.
Speaking to Australian media, the 29-year-old noted that she doesn’t miss traveling and being far away from home, but she does miss “the little moments” she had with her team.

Since retiring from professional tennis, Barty has been very family-oriented. The Australian tennis legend married Gerry Kissick in 2022 and they have since welcomed two children.
