Ashes 2025-26: ‘Knew their plans’ – Travis Head reflects on blistering ton in Australia’s eight-wicket win in Perth

Australia asserted its authority with an impressive eight-wicket victory over England in the first Test of the Ashes in Perth on Saturday, November 22. Mitchell Starc caused major damage with the ball while Travis Head delivered a brilliant century in the second innings to guide his side to victory.

Head opened in the second innings as Australia chased 205 and looked to finish the job quickly with an aggressive approach. The left-handed batsman hit 123 off 83 balls, hitting 16 fours and four sixes, and admitted he was aware of England’s plans against him. He added that the first game set the tone for the series and the team is aiming to do their best in the second Test in Brisbane.

“I don’t think I can describe the blow. Good start to the series. They are a seriously good side and the way Starcy led us yesterday, we couldn’t let that go. [Processed yet?] Not even close. I was happy to do it [open]. Knew their plans, short pitch bowling and what they would bring. Nice to be able to play a role. Wonderful start. [Who made the decision?] Coach and captain, I wanted to do it,” Head told Channel 7 after the match.

“I could easily have gone out first, gone out and seen what happens. First match, to set the tone. I’m looking forward to Brisbane now, what a start. I’ve tried to throw caution to the wind. They’re a seriously good bowling side. I’ve made a few 90s here, I got 99 once – so I’ve wasted a few. But a lovely place to bat.” [Ovation] Great moment, I’m not good at getting red ink. Normally you try to get off the field as quickly as possible. We’re going to celebrate, it’s an Ashes series, we’re 1-0 up, it’s a fantastic start,” he added.

Talking about the match, Starc claimed 10 for 113 in the first Test to completely dismantle the visitors. Ben Stokes also took a five-wicket haul, but the match ultimately turned Australia’s way and the match ended within just two days. Starc was Player of the Match for his fantastic performance with the ball.

The next encounter will now be played at Brisbane’s Gabba – one of the most iconic landmarks in Australia. It will be a day-night match as the hosts are currently awaiting the injury status of captain Pat Cummins, although the chances of the right-arm pacer’s return are currently in the balance and a decision will be made soon.
