Pat Cummins says he should be fit for the third Ashes Test in Adelaide after missing the first two matches with a back injury. His comeback would give Australia a big boost as they already lead the series 1-0 and look strong again in Brisbane.
Cummins said he feels physically ready and has been bowling at full intensity during training. He last played for Australia in July and skipped the pink ball test in Brisbane because he was not fully match fit.
“First of all, yes, I should be right for Adelaide. I have one more bowl tomorrow Sunday, and then we go to Adelaide and have another bowl there. Barring any hiccups, I’m good to go. The body feels great. Relatively close actually. My body feels great, I’m bowling at 100 per cent,” Cummins told Fox Sports.
He said his only concern is that he has not bowled on back-to-back days, something fast bowlers often face in Test cricket. He explained that bowlers usually train with a bowl, then a few rest days and then another session. Test matches require long periods on consecutive days, which is an important test of fitness.
“The big question mark when we come back from a bone injury is that we tend to have a bowl and a few days off, recovering, bowling, bowling. I haven’t done back-to-back bowls, so one of the risky things going into a Test match is that you are expected to bowl two days in a row, maybe three days in a row, and potentially quite a few overs,” he added.
Australia won the opening Test in Perth and are once again in control in Brisbane. Cummins returning for the Adelaide Test would add more strength to a side already looking ahead in the series.
