Ashes 2025-26: Australia announce 14-man squad for Gabba Test, Pat Cummins still out

Cricket Australia (CA) have announced their 14-man roster for the upcoming second Ash test in return for Englandwhich will take place at the Gabba in Brisbane. The announcement confirms that key fast bowlers, captain Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, will remain sidelined as they continue their respective recoveries.

Why Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood will miss the Gabba Test?

Permanent skipper Pat Cummins has not been risked for the Gabba match as he recovers from a lower back stress injury. Although he took part in extended pink-ball bowling sessions in Sydney, the selectors decided not to rush his return. The team management is maintaining a cautious approach, with hopes Cummins will be fit to lead the side in the third Test, scheduled for Adelaide.

Fellow fastest Josh Hazlewood will also miss the Brisbane Test. Hazlewood is working his way back to full fitness after picking up a hamstring injury. The selectors have prioritized his full recovery and opted not to bring any of their key pacers back into contention prematurely.

Who will lead Australia’s pace attack?

With both Cummins and Hazlewood unavailable, interim captain Steve Smith is expected to retain the same successful bowling line-up that secured the win in Perth. The pacey trio of Mitchell Starc, Scott Boland and Brendan Doggett are likely to lead the attack, supported by experienced spinner Nathan Lyon. Doggett, who impressed selectors in his first Test outing, will continue.

Usman Khawaja and Travis Head’s roles at the Gabba

Despite recently suffering from back spasms during the Perth Test, Usman Khawaja retains his place in the squad. His fitness will be crucial as he is expected to consolidate the top spot.

While Travis Head’s blistering performance as an impromptu opener in Perth sparked debate, he remains a confirmed member of the middle order depending on Khawaja’s fitness. The side will maintain strength on the bench with Josh Inglis, Michael Neser and Beau Webster providing cover, although they are likely to only feature if late fitness issues arise.
