Anderson made 12 appearances for the Rockies last season. He allowed 10 runs in 14 2/3 innings, striking out 10 while allowing a pair of free passes. The 35-year-old right-hander pitched in Triple-A with the Cardinals, Rox and Mariners. He combined for a 5.26 earned run average over 38 appearances, despite striking out an above-average 27.1% of the batters he faced.
A veteran of six big league seasons, Anderson has developed as a depth player since excelling at the positions with the Rays from 2019-20. Anderson has missed bats in Triple-A in recent years, but hasn’t translated that into many whiffs against MLB competition. He still has mid-90s velocity and a career 3.43 ERA over 177 big league appearances. That has earned him several looks at minor league contracts in recent years.
The A’s have one of the younger bullpens in the MLB. None of their projected relievers even have two years of service time. They’ll certainly make more impactful bullpen pickups in the coming months, but it’s no surprise they’ll want to add an experienced arm like Anderson to compete for a middle-relief spot in Spring Training.
