A subsidiary of leading Chinese auto group SAIC Motor Corporation, JSW MG Motor India said it has an advantage over any company operating in India when it comes to sourcing parts and new technology, especially for New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) or electric vehicles (EVs), a top official said.

“I think the advantage is not so much in getting the parts… the advantage is access to technology because if you look at the Chinese market, China produces 31 million cars per year and about 17-18 million cars are New Energy Vehicles (NEVs). India, on the other hand, is about 4.5 million as the size of the passenger car industry and EVs or hybrids together is not more than 2.5 to 3 lakh odd units. So through SAIC we can get access to technology that has scaled up to that extent and has therefore become more mature,” said Anurag Mehrotra, Managing Director, JSW MG Motor India. business line.

“So this access to technology that has scaled and matured is a very clear advantage that we have over anyone else, and then you combine that with the strength of JSW as a manufacturing giant, and the kind of frugality that they bring to their operations. I think that has the ingredients to create the absolutely great picture for us,” he noted.

Talking about investments, Mehrotra said JSW MG Motor will invest around ₹4,000 in growth over the next few years, largely spent on three categories – product, factory expansion in Halol (Gujarat) and the third would be the area of localization.

“The Halol plant today has a capacity of 1.1 to 1.2 lakh units per annum and I think we will start the expansion sometime this year to take it to around 3 lakh units,” he said, adding that the investment will come from internal accrual and also from whatever other options are available to generate the required cash or capex.

Meanwhile, he also said that JSW MG will launch four new products this year, the first of which is Majestor, a D+ sports utility vehicle (SUV), which is expected to hit the market in the next two months (April-May) and will compete with the likes of Toyota Fortuner.

After Majestor, the company will launch three more SUVs, all NEVs, and one of them would also be a plug-in hybrid.
