Aryna Sabalenka vs. Nick Kyrgios: Why the ‘Battle of the Sexes’ exhibition polarizes opinions

Kyrgios has long been a polarizing figure in the sport, given his checkered history on and off the pitch.

The Australian has been sanctioned several times over the course of his career for inappropriate behavior and fiery outbursts.

There have also been allegations of domestic violence and accusations of sexist comments.

Kyrgios pleaded guilty to assaulting an ex-girlfriend in 2023, but was subsequently forced to distance himself from controversial influencer Andrew Tate in 2024.

His recent comments about playing Sabalenka – in which he horribly questioned on a podcast whether he should ‘try 100%’ to win – have raised concerns that the event will fuel misogyny.

In a press release announcing the event, Kyrgios’ tone was clearly different.

“When the world number one challenges you, you answer the call. I have enormous respect for Aryna; she is a powerhouse and a true champion,” he said.

Sabalenka does not appear to think the match will have any negative impact on the perception of women’s sport, simply saying at the US Open that she thinks it is a “cool idea”.

Catherine Whitaker, co-host of the Tennis Podcast, believes the opposite.

“I see absolutely nothing to gain for women’s tennis – I just see gloom,” she told BBC Sport.

“It’s a crass commercial venture and a vehicle for one of the most outspoken misogynists in tennis, who just wants attention.

“If Sabalenka wins, she beats a man who is unfit and has been completely irrelevant for several years. What does she win? Nothing. Unless she wins 6-0 6-0, people will only find ammunition to shoot at women’s tennis.

“If Kyrgios wins, he and others with the same thoughts will argue that it legitimizes everything he already puts out. It’s disgusting to give him a podium.

“I think it’s downright ridiculous that this is going to happen in 2025.”
