Aryna Sabalenka explains why she is against transgender athletes in women’s tennis

Aryna Sabalenka is against the participation of transgender athletes in women’s tennis, because the four-time Grand Slam champion thinks it is “unfair” to compete against “a biological man” on the WTA Tour.

In 18 days, Sabalenka will face Nick Kyrgios in the Battle of the Sexes. The match will be played at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai. Speaking to Piers Morgan to promote the upcoming match, the WTA world number 1 denied claims it could potentially ‘damage women’s tennis’.

In the same conversation, Sabalenka was asked how she would feel if she had to compete against a transgender athlete in the Tour. The Belarusian tennis star was quick to note that she had “nothing against” transgender people, but noted that she was not a fan of transgender athletes competing in women’s sports.

Sabalenka: A biological man would have a huge advantage… Not fair

“That’s a tough question. I have nothing to say against them. But I feel like they still have a huge advantage over the women and I think it’s not fair to women to face basically biological men. It’s not fair. The woman has worked her whole life to reach her limit and then she has to go up against a man who is biologically much stronger, so for me I don’t agree with things like this in sports,” the 27-year-old told Morgan.

According to the WTA’s gender participation policy, transgender women must have maintained their gender for at least four years, have their testosterone levels lowered and agree to regular testing.

After Sabalenka made her point, Kyrgios said he fully agreed with the Belarusian’s views.

“I think she hit the nail on the head,” Kyrgios said.
