Arthur Fils injury update: Uncertain about 2026 return date

Arthur Fils missed almost the entire second half of the 2025 tennis season due to a stress fracture in his lower back. He withdrew from the French Open before the third round and played only one more event all year.

Already battling a back problem heading into Roland Garros, Fils defeated Nicolas Jarry in four sets before surviving an epic five-setter against Jaume Munar. The 21-year-old was unable to appear in court against Andrei Rublev two days later.

Fils returned at the Toronto Masters in late July, when he defeated Pablo Carreno Busta and then lost to Jiri Lehecka. The Frenchman will not play another match until 2025.

“Even injured, I defeated Jarry and Munar in a tough match,” said Fils in a recent interview with the French media. 20 minutes. “I’ve proven things to myself, but with a little more experience I would make the decision not to play in the tournament.”

“I went to play in Toronto. Unfortunately, I might have come back a little too early. So after that we took our time. We decided it was better not to play at the end of the season and completely rebuild my body, especially my back.”

Fils is ranked 14th at the French Open and has now fallen to 40th. Fils isn’t sure when he’ll be ready to come back in 2026. But he’s not worried about it either.

“The most important thing now is the coming training period,” he noted. “It’s about continuing to work hard, training well both therapeutically and physically and continuing with the treatment. But I don’t have a date yet. To be honest, that’s not the most important thing.

“Honestly, [recovery] it’s going very well. Of course you have to be patient; it takes time. But everything is fine.”
