The Indian Coast Guard has arrested three Sri Lankan nationals with two Sinhalese and one Lankan-Tamil while trying to infiltrate Tamil Nadu in the early hours of Saturday. The arrest took place near Dhanushkodi, a region that is notorious for smuggling and other cross -border illegal activities due to the proximity of the Sri Lankan coast.
On a tip, the Coast Guard intensified supervision and used Hovercrafts to patrol the sand ridges that naturally formed in the narrow seam between India and Sri Lanka. Around 4 o’clock, officials saw three people stranded on the fourth sand ridge.
When interrogated, the individuals identified themselves as Sumith Rolan Fernando, Sahara Gunathilaga, both Sinhalese and Kabilan, a Lankan Tamil.
“The three had reportedly paid RS 2 Lakh and left the Pechalai district at 9 p.m. on Friday evening and reached the ridge at 4 o’clock in the morning and were also planning to leave for a European nation via Tamilnadu,” said civil servants.
Kabilan was previously arrested in a drug -related matter and is currently on bail. The two Sinhalese also have criminal registers related to the drug mafia, sources revealed.
In a similar case earlier, the Sri Lankan coastguard had arrested two other people: Immanuel Mushab and Ajithhan, both with a criminal background, trying to infiltrate Tamil Nadu.
The arrested persons were transferred to the State Police in Mandapam for further research. The Coast Guard is retained an increased vigilance along the coast of Tamil Nadu, especially in areas that are vulnerable to illegal seafarers.
