Dominik Szoboszlai was one of Liverpool’s five goalscorers in the 5-1 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday night, with his goal marking a great achievement for him and his team.

The Hungarian scored his second goal of the season with a fierce strike from 20 yards in the 70th minute as the Reds ruthlessly put their hosts to the sword at Deutsche Bank Park, leaving journalist Bence Bocsak to hail an ‘absolute masterclass’ from the 24-year-old.

The stats of the midfielder’s performances in Germany certainly make for good reading – he also claimed an assist on the corner kick from which Ibrahima Konate scored, along with completing 105 of 110 passes, winning 100% of his duels and executing five key passes (Bank score).

Slot underlines the importance of Szoboszlai for Liverpool

Speaking to the media after the resounding victory in Frankfurt, Arne Slot pointed to one statistic that accurately reflects the importance he attaches to Szoboszlai at Liverpool.

The head coach said (via liverpoolfc.com): “Dominik has done a good job again. Since I came here, he is one of the players who, maybe after Virgil [van Dijk] and Mo [Salah]played the most minutes for me. That tells you how I feel about him.”

Szoboszlai was almost always present this season

The figures support Slot’s point that the Reds’ number 8 is one of his most used players during his Anfield reign so far.

Together with Van Dijk, he has had the most playing time for Liverpool this season 1,080 minutes on the field. Excluding the Carabao Cup match against Southampton (when we had a much-changed line-up), these are the only two ever gifts for LFC in the current campaign (Transfer market).

As the table below shows, the Hungarian has played the fourth most minutes overall for the Merseyside club since the current head coach took charge in the summer of 2024.

The most minutes were played for Liverpool under Arne Slotvia Transfermarkt
Virgil van Dijk5,517
Mo is wrong5,440
Ryan Gravenberch4,961
Dominik Szoboszlai4,509
Alexis MacAllister4,110

Szoboszlai is also making the most of his time on the pitch and leads the way in Slot’s selection due to some underlying performance metrics.

According to FBrefThe 24-year-old has registered more shot-creating (51) and goal-creating actions (7), won more tackles (16) and posted more ball recoveries (70) than any of his teammates, along with making the most collective blocks (11) and the second-most progressive carries (31).

The Hungarian has even put in some strong performances at right-back in the opening weeks of the season, but he showed again last night that he comes into his own in his usual midfield position, and he proved in Frankfurt why his coach continues to select him in almost every match.
