MMA journalism is often criticized for running questions at surface level instead of tackling the deeper problems that influence the sport. Ariel Helwanihas long been on for a long time as a voice that is not afraid to confront uncomfortable truths. Whether it shouts Dana White For the UNDWhelming UFC 322 of the UFC 322 Main event announcement or the questioning of the long -term health of the sport under the dominance of the promotion, the Canadian journalist has consistently put forward the conversation.
That fearless approach went with regard to a costs. In 2016, Helwani’s directness led to a very public fight with the UFC, who for years burden his relationship with the company. While he continued to appear at certain events, the tension was never completely relaxed. Now, almost nine years later, there are signs that White is finally open to bury the ax and repair his broken relationship with one of the most influential journalists in MMA.
Dana White vs. Ariel Helwani: a feud that defined MMA journalism
For context, Fox served as the official temporary partner of the UFC and Ariel Helwani from 2011 to 2019 played a key role in that era as MMA Insider of the network. His position of course brought him closer to Dana White, but that relationship eventually soured in a dramatic way.
Helwani was often the first to break big stories, in particular Brock Lesnar’s shocking return to UFC 200 In anticipation of the official announcement of the company and the long -awaited rematch of Conor McGregor with Nate Diaz on UFC 202. Those scoops were not good with the promotion and tensions cooked at UFC 199, where the news was broken.
That night, Helwani was accompanied from the Arena and he told that he would never be certified for UFC events again. However, the prohibition took only 48 hours before it was canceled, but the Fallout left a lasting figure on his relationship with the company.
During an appearance on the Logan Paul podcast ImpaulsiveWhite was asked about claims from the MMA community that the UFC is currently no superstars. White shot back and asked Paul who made those comments. When Paul revealed that it was Ariel Helwani, fans are deleting the usual destructive comments from the UFC CEO to the journalist.
Instead, White surprised everyone. “How are him doing?” he asked. Paul explained, “He’s upset that the relationship is what it is with the UFC,” Referring to the appearance of Helwani at the show a month earlier. White responded easily, “Yes?” Before adding, “I’m upset about it too.”
He then left the door open for reconciliation. “Maybe we should sort this thing. We probably all have to come together again.”

The UFC head Honcho had a smile on his face, making it difficult to say if he was sincere or just joking, but the moment led to a lot of speculation among fans. And it is safe to say that the same doubt also appeared in Helwani’s thoughts, who later approached White’s comments, making him clear that he does not believe that the UFC -CEOoo offered a real olive branch.
He said, “For me it comes off [White] Saying: ‘Where is that guy? That guy dropped, he is no longer relevant. I don’t feel that he said there was very sincere, I think it was 99,999 percent sarcastic. “
He continued: “Usually when I am raised, he calls me all the names under the sun … This time he just said what you just heard,” Helwani explained. “Is that because I am not so relevant to him? Maybe. Is that because he misses me? Maybe. I don’t think it’s the last one.”
It is quite clear that Dana was sarcastic in his convo with Logan and Mike. The only thing that stood out was that he did not return to the name rolling (bastard, lowlife, po’s, etc.).

Whether this actually turns out to be the restart of their relationship will be interesting to see. However, Helwani’s journey in MMA Media has been anything but normal. He launched the MMA hour with Ariel Helwani in 2009 and quickly established himself as one of the leading voices of the sport.
By 2011, his growing reputation brought him a place at FOX Sports, where he became a weekly insider tonight at UFC. As already mentioned, this was during the FOX era of the UFC, when the promotion broke into the regular sports TV for the first time. And Helwani was in the middle of all this.
Nevertheless, the damage was caused with the UFC 200 debacle. While Helwani UFC maps continued to attend the UFC 248, the relationship between him and white was never the same. Many new fans wrongly believe that he has been banned since UFC 199, but in reality Helwani was present afterwards at almost every important event, including UFC 200, 201, 202 and beyond.
His absence of events in recent years has less to do with a ban and more to do with circumstances. The COVID-19 Pandemie, followed by its move to ESPN, changed the landscape. Helwani herself hinted that shady transactions behind the scenes in the UFC also played a role to keep it away.
When his ESPN contract went, he started to breathe new life into the MMA on YouTube and build one of the most influential platforms in combat sports media.
