I spent half the morning in bed scrolling doomsday on my phone. I know I shouldn’t! The angel on my shoulder tells me that every other day. The devil on the other side says the opposite. “It’s relaxation!” “You deserve it!” “You have to stay informed!”. And so it goes on, week after week, month after month, year after year.
I don’t know about you, but I think I’m feeling a shorter attention span myself. For example, I find it difficult to get my thoughts in order and write clearly longer texts (learn to answer the phone once and twice before publishing this blog post!). Do I need to undergo ADHD screening, am I going through menopause with associated heart fog, or am I simply damaged by years of frequent smartphone use?
Ironically, it feels like our power banks are being given the same status as life support machines. They have become the defibrillators, ventilators and infusion pumps of our time. It is not just a joke that the mobile phone charger is just as important to us as the IV tube is to a seriously ill person. Without charging in the mobile phone it is hardly possible to book a hospital visit, not to start your electric car, not to log in to the bank, not to pay for parking, not to turn on the lights in our padel hall, not to travel around a new city and above all not to reach your friends and family. Apparently not to search for information or to draw your own conclusions, since ChatGPT entered this world.
I veterinary surgeon that I’m exaggerating. I veterinary surgeon that this is a recurring topic on the blog. What I though not knowing is how to relate to the subject. Are smartphones the best or the worst thing that could happen to humanity? “Good question,” my teenage son responded when I asked him, suggesting that these two answers shouldn’t be the only ones.

With a high probability you will read this text yourself on a smartphone. According to Google Analytics, 70-80 percent of my readers usually use mobile phones when visiting Resfridag. Readers drive traffic, which in turn brings me assignments and collaborations, which helps me pay some of my bills. Maybe the blog you read on your smartphone is the best thing that happened in my little corner of humanity? My son is absolutely right that the question in the title is wrong. The issue is of course much more complex than that.
What do you think about your own smartphone today? Is this the best or worst thing that happened to you, or maybe somewhere in between?
