Starting later this year, Apple will begin producing Mac minis intended for sale in the US. The company took The Wall Street Journal during a tour of the Houston facility, where Foxconn also builds servers for Apple Intelligence, and was shown an empty warehouse. Apple says it will turn the space into a 220,000-square-foot factory where it will produce the compact desktop computers. The decision to produce Mac minis for local sale in the US is part of the company’s efforts to deliver on its promise last year to spend $500 billion in the US over the next four years.
If you recall, Apple announced that it would increase its investments and hiring in the US after Tim Cook met with President Trump. The president said at the time that the company was growing its U.S. investments because it wanted to avoid tariffs. Prior to that promise, during the Biden administration in 2021, Apple pledged to invest $430 billion domestically over the next five years.
Like the Magazine notes that Apple previously made Mac Pros at a factory in Texas, but production at the factory has declined in recent years. Sabih Khan, Apple’s COO, told the Magazine that the company has more confidence in predicting long-term demand for the Mac mini. At the same time, the model represents a small portion of Apple’s sales, making it one of the company’s best options if it wants to bring more production to the US. After all, it will be incredibly difficult to shift production of a more in-demand product, the researchers say iPhonestate side. The companies that make and assemble iPhones in China already have factories equipped and people with skills honed to produce Apple’s best-selling device.
Khan said the Houston plant will be able to meet local demand as production increases, and insinuated it may start small. Apple will also continue to produce Mac minis in Asia for everyone else in the world.
