Manchester United have received an unlikely boost in their pursuit of Antoine Semenyo as England’s elite prepare for a winter war for AFC Bournemouth’s talisman, a report has revealed.
Available in January
Semenyo has enjoyed a red-hot start to the season on the south coast, with only Manchester City striker Erling Haaland producing more goal contributions than the Ghanaian international.
Six goals and three assists in 11 games for a team that sits eighth in the Premier League is an impressive result, especially when you take into account the 25-year-old winger’s excellent work rate and defensive contributions in the other direction.

Equally capable of playing at either end of the pitch, Semenyo has shown a tangible improvement in efficiency in front of goal this year. The Athletics reveals he has become “more selective” with his finishing, with his xG (expected goals) per shot almost doubling from 0.08 last season to 0.14 this year.
This leads to the former Bristol City star being described as an “incredibly effective player in the final third” – and proves why United, along with their bitter domestic rivals, are hot on his heels this winter.
Semenyo signed a new contract in the summer after bids were submitted by the Red Devils and Tottenham Hotspur, which included a pay rise and release clause worth £65 million.
But the clause is only active in the first ten days of January as it gives Bournemouth time to find a suitable replacement should their prized asset be ripped from their grasp mid-season. It will then become active again for a select part of the summer, at a slightly lower price.
While £65m is a significant outlay, this is the going rate for Premier League strikers with a track record of goals – as United can recognize after their successful pursuit of Matheus Cunha (£62.5m) and Bryan Mbeumo (£71m).
And the fact that one of the division’s best wingers is available for that price in January – a period when fees are normally high – explains why England’s elite are all on red alert over a potential transfer.
Reports suggest that United and Spurs are joining Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City in the growing queue for Semenyo, although the Ghanaian is expected to remain at the Vitality Stadium until the end of the season.
United’s advantage in the race
TEAMtalk However, reveals that United have a trump card over their rivals, with Bournemouth technical director Simon Frances a lifelong Red Devils fan.
The director is “ready to pitch the vision of Old Trafford to Semenyo” – a push that has “strengthened” United’s pursuit and given them “an edge over their rivals”.
The report claims a bid is in the “advanced planning stages”, with United’s head coach a big fan of the 25-year-old winger: “Ruben Amorim sees the versatile winger as the missing spark in a side craving dynamism”.
Last night’s dismal 0-1 defeat to 10-man Everton exposed the ineffectiveness of Amorim’s left side, with Patrick Dorgu unable to provide any quality at wing-back, while his replacement Diogo Dalot offered little improvement.
Like, and it’s a big one as given United’s limited budget, INEOS could snap up Semenyo as a late Christmas present for their head coach; it would represent a transformative upgrade for the left. And it seems they could thank a childhood United fan deep undercover at the Vitality Stadium if they did.
