For a young player as talented as Anthony Edwards, it would be easy to get caught up in individual awards. However, throughout the season, Ant has remained steadfast in his belief that his goal for this season is to bring a championship to the Minnesota Timberwolves.
During a recent video on his YouTube channel, Edwards doubled down on winning a title as his sole goal.
“Winning a championship, that’s all I think. Because all the greats have won the championship, so if I win a championship, I’m cool,” Ant said when asked what he wants to achieve.
Edwards later supported the same philosophy when asked about the MVP award. Although Ant also hinted at a football career after winning his first championship, to me this was more of a joke than a serious possibility. Whatever the case, it’s clear that Ant has his eye on the prize and isn’t focused on individual accolades. This mentality is exactly what Timberwolves fans would want to hear.
It’s all about winning a championship for Ant and the Timberwolves
Listen, I’m not here to say that Ant has achieved every single honor yet. He still hasn’t won an MVP, made an All-NBA first team or been named an All-Star starter. In the grand scheme of things, though, these are small potatoes.
After back-to-back appearances in the conference finals, winning a championship is the next logical step, and it should be his only goal – thankfully Edwards understands that.
Ant-Man is in the midst of a career-best season, averaging 29.3 points. He has worked tirelessly on his craft every offseason, and it has helped him reach the next level. Edwards’ growth as a mid-range scorer has been the story of the season. Notably, Ant is shooting a career-best 44.1 percent from mid-range on 3.9 attempts per game.
This improved mid-range shooting has made Edwards less predictable and helped him have the best clutch season of his career. In addition to his phenomenal scoring, Wolves will need Ant to give his best as a playmaker and give everything defensively to reach their full ceiling.
With the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder, the rising San Antonio Spurs and the ever-dangerous Denver Nuggets coming out of the Western Conference, winning the championship will ultimately be a challenging task.
Nevertheless, when you have a player as talented as Anthony Edwards, surprises always happen – we’ve seen that in the past two playoffs. Whether it’s this year or in the not-too-distant future, the Timberwolves could feasibly win a championship, and Ant is the perfect man to lead the team to these lofty heights.
