The angels announced that Infront Scott Kingery has done a distance and has been pulled down against Triple-a Salt Lake. He was appointed earlier this week for an assignment when Righty Shaun Anderson was selected in the schedule.
Kingery has the right to reject this assignment, but probably not. Players with at least three years of major League service have the right to reject outright assignments to choose a free agency. However, they need five years of service to do this, while keeping their remaining salary obligations intact. Koning is in that three-to-five window. He and the angels avoided arbitration in the low season by agreeing with a $ 770k salary. There is just less than $ 200k to pay, so he should run away from that money to reach the open market.
Once a remarkable prospect with the Phillies, he signed an extension of $ 24 mm with them in 2018. At that time that was a record for a player who had not yet made his Major League debut. Unfortunately he could not give the Phils the return they expected. He only hit .229/.280/.387 in 1,127 plate performances for the Phillies. He was often done by distance because the expansion went on his course, without no other club wanted to accept it.
That deal was closed when the angels brought him on board and gave him a place of 40 men to prevent him from reaching the Minor League Free Agency. They agreed to the aforementioned arbitration salary and then gave him through the opening day through the opening day. Due to the aforementioned circumstances, Kingery accepted an outright assignment in March and remained around as a non-raster depth player who could penetrate several defensive positions.
He was added back to the 40-man in May, but has largely had an optional assignment. He received 14 games for the Halo’s and took 27 record performances. He produced a .160/.222/.200 battle line and now has a .228/.279/.382 line for his career. In Triple-A he has a .256/.317/.424 line this year. In the battle-friendly environment of the Pacific Coast League, this translates into a 78 WRC+, indicating that he has been about 22% below the competition average.
Assuming he accepts this assignment and again joins the bees, he will want to play his way back to the Majors. If it is not added at the end of the season at the end of the 40-man, he may be able to choose a Minor League Free Bureau, as is the case for all players with at least three years of service removed from a 40-man during a season.
