Manchester United are on the verge of completing another transfer window without a first-team midfield contract.
United’s latest midfield signing was Manuel Ugarte, who moved to Old Trafford from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2024.
Since then, the Red Devils have shown interest in a number of midfielders without making a decisive move for any of them, despite Ugarte’s failure to effectively replace the aging Casemiro.
Angel Gomes returns to the Premier League
Manchester United academy graduate Angel Gomes, who played alongside Michael Carrick in his Premier League debut in 2017, is closing in on a return to England’s top flight.
In 2020, Gomes left United to join French side Lille in his bid to fulfill his potential. The Englishman had a promising spell at Les Dogues and even managed to attract the attention of his boyhood club with his performances in Ligue 1.
Gomes has been on United’s radar since late 2024. His technical skills and past connections made him an attractive target, but he ultimately joined Olympique de Marseille on a free transfer last summer.
Mason Greenwood, another United academy product, has proven to be a great success in the south of France. However, Gomes has struggled to find his feet under Roberto De Zerbi and is now ready for a new adventure.
Wolves reach agreement to sign Angel Gomes
According to Fabrizio RomanoWolverhampton Wanderers have reached an agreement in principle for Gomes.
The Italian journalist claims that the Midlands club will sign the 25-year-old on an initial loan deal with an option to buy worth around €7 million.
In addition, Wolves will pay €1 million in loan fees for the diminutive midfielder.
The England international is likely to play in the middle of the park alongside Joao Gomes and Andre for the relegation-battling side.
United could be keeping a close eye on Wolves for Brazilian Gomes ahead of their summer midfield overhaul. It is widely reported that the combative midfielder is keen to join the Premier League giants.
