Andy Roddick identifies Coco Gauff’s ‘superpower’: the only one who can do that

Andy Roddick thinks Coco Gauff has one ‘superpower’ and that is finding a way to win matches and titles when her play is far from ideal.

Entering 2025, the 21-year-old has two Grand Slam titles to her name, a WTA Finals audience and has been ranked No. 2 in the world multiple times.

Although Gauff has achieved tremendous success at a young age, it is no secret that she has often struggled with her serve, especially with double faults. The American’s backhand was also questionable at times. Yet she has won a lot in recent years.

In the final episode of his Served podcast for 2025, Roddick took a moment to credit Gauff for never shying away from being “uncomfortable” on the field and winning “ugly” when things aren’t going well. The 2003 US Open champion also stated that the current world number 3 is probably the only player in the game who can make more than 20 double faults in a match and still end up on the winning side.

Roddick: Winning consistently under such difficult circumstances is Gauff’s superpower

“Going through things that don’t work physically and mentally and getting through that and winning consistently is a superpower. There’s no world where anyone else on earth can have to deal with 20 or 25 double faults and we’re looking up and to scale, not for a tournament. Every year she’s two in the world, three in the world. She’s not leaving those positions,” Roddick said on his podcast.

“It doesn’t matter how much we see her struggle. We have to give Coco credit where credit is due at some point. Going through things that don’t work physically and mentally and coming through them and winning consistently is a superpower. If the losses are ugly, I don’t care. She’s the best in the world at being uncomfortable on any given day and pulling out a win.”

In August, Gauff hired Gavin MacMillan — the same biomechanics expert who famously fixed Aryna Sabalenka’s serve in 2022.

Gauff already showed some improvement in her serving in late 2025, but the real impact is expected to be seen in early 2026 after she and MacMillan complete their first offseason together.
