  • Android offers handy built-in back-up tools, but they do not store every file on your phone automatically.
  • Google seems to be working on a new option to explicitly back up the downloaded files.
  • At the moment it is not clear whether this would support all files or would be limited to documents.

Creating your data is easy to avoid one of the most important thing you can do if you want to avoid a smartphone accident, causing you to cause a lot of heart, but back -ups are not always equalized. It is easy to see why someone might assume that engaging Android -Back -Up would enable them to restore a 1: 1 copy of their entire phone, but the Google tools do not treat all data the same.

At the moment, Google’s backup offers two main options: photos and videos and other device data. The first is simple enough and protects all your Google photos -content. However, the latter can be a bit confusing and includes everything, from device settings to SMS message history to app data.

However, what does ‘app data’ count? Although it varies from app to app which content they store, this category does not contain things such as the files you download with Chrome. And although you are free to manually archive the folder of your phones with a service such as Google Drive, those files are not normally covered by Android -Backups.

Looking through the changes that are present in Google Play Services version 25.32.31 BETA, we have identified what an attempt seems to be to give users an explicit option to keep those downloads.

Just as the Google photos system uses to back up your photos and video, it seems that Google will lean on Drive to manage the actual storage -this feels as if it is largely implemented here because of visibility.

I don’t want to miss the best Android Authority?

We have been able to solve this early look (you will not find these options visible when performing the beta itself), but we have not yet been able to see the system in action, so that we have a handful of questions about its behavior. For example, does Google only speak specifically about the “downloads” folder in the file system of your phone, or can this also contain downloaded content that is stored on your phone elsewhere?

We are also curious about ‘Back -up documents“Text on the second screen. That can very well imply that Google is not going here to cover each last file type under the sun, and these back -ups can entail a more limited scope that we initially thought.

Hopefully we can gain more insight into that behavior before this goes live. Some users may prefer those backups that are limited to only documents, but we would like to confirm anyway.

⚠️ A MOT Teardown Helps in predicting functions that can achieve a service in the future based on the operating code. However, it is possible that such predicted functions may not come to a public release.
