The goalkeeper situation of Manchester United has been the subject of much discussion and speculation this season.
Ruben Amorim entered the preseason with Andre Onana and Altay Bayındır as his goalkeeper options. Onana, however, quickly fell out of favor among the United Head Coach and was eventually replaced by Senne Lammens.
Trabzonspor came across the occasion and insured the services of the Cameroon International on a seasonal loan.
Onana makes a promising start
The 29-year-old looked impressive in his first two performances for the Super Lig-Outfit, and underlined why United spent a first € 51 million to sign him from Inter Milan in 2023.
During his debut, Onana earned a man from the Match Award in the 1-0 loss of his side for Fenerbahce after eight saves.
Against Gaziantep on Saturday, the Cameroonian showed his incredible skill with the ball at his feet, making a Pinpoint long pass for the equalizer of Paul Onuachu.
Turkish media -outlet Fanatik, who responded to his start of life at Trabzonspor, wrote (via Sports Bible): “After okay [Yokuslu] Was sent away and Trabzonspor was reduced to 10 men, Onana held his team in the game with his rescues.
“He cleared the ball of the post for the goal of and Nesyri and fought as far back as he could return. His performance was enough to let someone forget his dark days at United.”
Taka Gazete reported: “The 29-year-old, who radiated confidence in the goal, made various crucial saves during the game and stood in the way of the growing gorge.”
“He played a fantastic game and his experience is so clear,” Milliyet added.
Amorim still has to debut at Lammens
While Onana apparently found his feet in Turkey, Lammens is still waiting to make his debut for United, after he had moved from Royal Antwerp to Old Trafford on the Deadline Day. The Belgian has rejected Galatasaray and Aston Villa in favor of joining the Red Devils.
Bayındır has had a number of shaky moments between the sticks. In his five Premier League performances, Bayındır has admitted eight goals and remains without a cleanheet.
Amorim, however, continues to support Turkey International. Given his reluctance to deviate from his rigid ideas and make changes, fans may not get Lamens Shielding United’s Net quickly.
