“I think he should wait all year round, whether he wants to sign there in the long term or not,” said former NHL defender and now Spittin ‘Chiclets Podcast Host Keith Yandle this week. Saying that Connor McDavid has earned the right to take his time on a contract extension, Yandle believes that McDavid should play the season and then make his decision.
Needless to say, that is a non-starter for the Edmonton Oilers.
Yandle went on to note: “He’s giving everything he has. They have been on the brink of winning the last two years, and he’s given them chances. Every year he’s in the league, it’s thriving, the Edmonton Oilers are in a good spot because of him. Anything he does, he has the right to do.
These are honest comments when it comes to McDavid. However, it suggests that the oilers would be willing to let their captain play the season without an extension, including the passing of the trade deadline and the risk of losing him for nothing, is excluded.
As much as the losing of McDavid during the season the opportunities of the oilers to win a Stanley Cup in 2025-26, the return for him to the Trade Deadline for a competition would be outrageous. Oilers Management would be more than irresponsible to make so many assets stay with a team if they chose to chase a cup, but let McDavid walk in a free desk.
The trade return for McDavid would be incredible
The Oilers would stand in line teams to give them players, prospects and picks at the Trade Deadline. Although some would claim that the oilers lose leverage because the trade McDavid means that he has let the organization know that he is gone, that is not necessary.
Firstly, the Oilers can tell other teams that McDavid is open to stay, but there is no guarantee, so they are not willing to risk it. Secondly, so many McDavid teams will want the enormous demand for the trade market to increase prices for every deal. The oilers get several choices, a grid player, top perspectives, even if there is no guarantee that McDavid will extend everywhere. Teams will be willing to give up their future for a chance of the championship this season.
The oilers cannot make that chance slide to stay competitive if it is available, and they think that McDavid will not decide on his future before it is too late to trade it.
