At the age of 40, Amorim strives for a major improvement in his second campaign. United finished last season in a disastrous 15th place in the competition and was defeated by Tottenham in the Europa League final. ..Read more
The arrival of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Teenage Talent Diego Leon could give United a much needed boost, especially with Marcus Rashford on the way to Barcelona for a seasonal loan agreement with a purchase option.
In the meantime, the future of Antony, Jadon Sancho, Tyrell Malacia and Alejandro Garnacho remain in the air, although the recent comments from Amorim on BBC Sport are strongly suggesting that Garnacho might not be part of his long-term plans.
“Garnacho is a real talented boy. But sometimes things don’t work,” Amorim explained.
“You cannot specifically explain what it is. It is clear that he wants something different with a different leadership.
“They want new challenges. The market is open. I just work with the players I think they will stay.”
He also unveiled the six players he charged to be part of a leadership group for dressing room prior to the new season.
“I don’t treat the players as babies,” Amorim added. “But they now have rules, and that can change the way you train.
“I am always at the top. If you don’t train in the right way, I have images to show you. And I will show you for everyone.”
Bruno Fernandes, Harry Maguire, Tom Heaton, Diogo Dalot, Lisandro Martinez and Mazraoui have been appointed to deal with ‘small things’ in the dressing room.
In another interview with athletics, Amorim added: “So it’s not just the oldest, Nous [Mazraoui] Is in the group because he is a character that I like.
“I try to understand the dynamics of the group, try to reach every room. They are the boys who are responsible for keeping everyone in line.”
And supporters responded quickly to social media, with some surprised by the list.
A fan said, “Dalot of all people.”
Another added: “Leadership and Dalot in the same sense?”
A third claimed: “What the hell does Dalot do there?”
