Ruben Amorim has called for more power at Manchester United, insisting he has become the club’s ‘manager’ and not ‘head coach’.

Amorim has endured a challenging time since arriving at Old Trafford in November 2024, with the club finishing 15th in the Premier League last season and losing the Europa League final to Tottenham.

This season, United sit fifth in the Premier League but remain inconsistent in their performances. Amorim’s side drew 1-1 with Leeds in the Premier League on Sunday, a result which followed a draw against 20th-placed Wolves in midweek.

Speculation continues over the 40-year-old’s future, amid continued criticism of his tactics and external frustration over the refusal to adapt his system.

During his post-match press conference, Amorim suggested he needs more overall control before rushing out of the assembled media.

“I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the head coach. I know my name is not Conte, Tuchel or Mourinho, but I am the manager of Manchester United,” he said.

“This will continue for 18 months, or until the board decides to change. I’m not going to stop. I will do my job until another man comes here to replace me.”
