James Bond is in a precarious place – the franchise, that is, not the character itself. Until a few months ago, the brand had had an icy pattern, with little event but a lot of arguments. Amazon had bought MGM Studios for $ 8.45 billion in 2021 so that they could make bond films-all to discover that producer Barbara Broccoli and her half-brother, Michael G. Wilson, still had complete creative control over the franchise. Amazon wanted to work with them, but Broccoli was not so enthusiastic about their idea Wall Street JournalAmazon managers started discussing bond ‘content’. Broccoli, in turn, thought they were “idiots” and stopped them to make a lot.
A reality show with a bond theme organized by Brian Cox from “Succession” was their only film or TV release, and it flopped on arrival. In the meantime, the new Bond game of IO Interactive, “007 First Light”, looks fantastic, but it will not be released until next year and has been developing for several years. The announcement trailer only released earlier this month.
This detention pattern – from Amazon that suggested ideas and broccoli that they kill – lasted until February, when Broccoli sold out the creative rights to the brand for a non -specified fortune. When hearing the news, the internet and the industry were working with questions.
Who would be the next band? Would he appear in a TV program or a film franchise, or both, or several of both? Would they respect the legendary real estate that they have spent billions, or milking dry, as Disney did with Marvel and Star Wars?
Time will only tell it, but has given a good sign today, as Amazon announced that Denis Villeneuve will direct the next Bond film. A Quebec born in Quebec, Mr. Villeneuve came fame with dark thrillers and dramas in particular: “Incendies“”, “Prison“,” “Enemy” and “sicario” -Voordat he increases his budgets and ambitious with large -scale gene photos.
‘Arrival’ of 2016 delivered him his first best director Oscar nomination; “Blade Runner 2049” was a fantastic legacy follow -up on a film that didn’t need it; and his two -part adjustment of “Dune” proven that you could remain authentic for Nerdy source material and at the same time make a broad, accessible and entertaining blockbuster.
One can hope that he brings the same way to the famous spy of Great Britain, and it seems encouraging. He is a great director to choose – more intensive for the source material than colleagues such as Tarantino or Nolan, but still with a separate, author – and I am enthusiastic about his opinion about Bond.
In the announcement of Amazon, Mr. Villeneuve is quoted that:
“Some of my earliest film-going memories are connected to 007. I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, since Dr. No with Sean Connery. I am a die-hard Bond fan. For me he is a holy territory. I am planning to honor the tradition and open the path for many new missions.”
The famous producer Amy Pascal will also work with him on the film.
It is easy to read too much in the references, but there are some important collection restaurants to consider. Firstly, Mr Villeneuve was not interested in signing a franchise contract with several films and only makes for a single photo for now. But also a part of the attraction is that he can shape his world of Spycraft if he deems necessary. The managers of Amazon will still have to sign – and contribute to – the constant great creative decisions, but he will have placed a setting, period and tone that Amazon has bought.
A big excellent question remains when this film will release. Mr. Villeneuve is in pre -production for his third “Dune” film, so a release of 2028 seems as earliest as possible.
Anyway, it is an encouraging first announcement for Amazon. Then we have to see if they get Bond’s casting.
