Amanda Serrano has one of the deepest resumes in the sweet science, but has a specific goal in mind that she could potentially achieve this calendar year. The seven-division world champion returns to the ring this weekend when Serrano faces Reina Tellez on Saturday, January 3.
Serrano returns to a fervently partisan crowd in San Juan, Puerto Rico, looking to defend her WBO, WBA and Ring featherweight titles. In addition to that goal of successfully defending the belts and referring to some more specific ambitions referred to earlier, Amanda Serrano said [via Ring Magazine],
“[I’m taking it] fight by fight, but I do have goals. I need the knockouts record. I need 50 wins, so there are certain goals. I have to keep going.”
The knockout record for women’s boxers that Serrano wants to eclipse is currently held by acclaimed boxer Christy Martin. Martin has amassed a total of 32 KOs in 49 fights, with Serrano just one stoppage away from equaling the famed boxing hall’s record. With Martin recently being portrayed by Hollywood star Sydney Sweeney in a big screen biopic, Martin clearly has a huge profile, and for Serrano to pass over such a person would be huge.
Amanda Serrano “I want to see women’s boxing grow”
Amanda Serrano is set to fight again here at 126 pounds after back-to-back iconic clashes with Katie Taylor at 140 pounds.
After a July setback at points in the Taylor trilogy, Serrano returns to a passionate partisan audience for the first time in four years. ‘The Real Deal’ aims to remain a game-changer for women in boxing as someone who has continued to redefine the paradigm since her professional debut in 2009.
Amanda explains this persistent hunger and specific thought process Serrano declared [via Ring Magazine],
“As someone who helps the sport, women’s boxing and the sport in general… In the beginning, women had to have a job [and] we had to have a nine-to-five ratio because we weren’t getting paid like we’re getting paid now, and it’s still not the best. Not everyone gets paid the best.”
“I’m blessed, but we have other lives too. I want to see women’s boxing grow. I want the women to be able to focus just on boxing, just on the sport, on their craft and get what they deserve and get the reward they deserve.”
