Amanda Anisimova storms in the US Open final, seems to expand the American success at Majors

Two months after ashamed of 6-0, 6-0 in the final of Wimbledon, Amanda Anisimova is back in a second consecutive Grand Slam final.

The 23-year-old American Nr. 8 Seed continued her dream run on the US Open with a 6-7, 7-6, 6-3 victory in Arthur Ashe Stadium on four-time large champions and no. 23 Naomi Osaka. The epic collision of concussion lasted 2 hours, 56 minutes and ended Friday at 12:54 pm. The once full stadium had decreased by the end to less than half.

Anisimova, who was born in Freehold, NJ, will be confronted with World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the final of Saturday (4 p.m., ESPN) after Sabalenka no. 4 Jessica Pegula had achieved in three sets in a rematch of the 2024 finals.

“Oh my God, it means the world,” she said on the field. “I am trying to process that now. This has forever been a dream of mine to be in the US Open Final. Of course, the dream is to be the champion.”

The final of Saturday is a rematch of the semi -final of Wimbledon won by Anisimova in three sets. Anisimova has a 6-3 advantage on Sabalenka.

Anisimova can become the third other American woman who wins a big title this year after Madison Keys won the Australian Open and Coco Gauff the French Open.

“If she plays like that, she is unbeatable,” said 18-way Grand SLAM champion Chrissie Evert on the ESPN broadcast.

Anisimova came out of the match of her life 24 hours earlier when she throw away no. 2 Iga Swiateek in straight sets in the quarterfinals after she had a double bageled by Swiatek in the final of Wimbledon.

“To come back and replicate that a lot demands from Amanda,” said Evert.

But after dropping the first set in a tiebreak, Anisimova did not leave.

She raised her level and made fewer mistakes while she kept touching.

Anisimova earned a break for 3-1 in the decisive third set.

She served on 5-3 before the game, she had a double match point at 40-15 before she lost three directly to see a breaking point.

She fought back and won it with a huge forehand in the corner and then approached Osaka to shake hands.

Osaka offered to become the first mother who won a Grand Slam title since Kim Clijsters won three after the birth of her daughter Jada in 2008. Clijsters won the US Open in 2009 and 2010 and the Australian Open in 2011 as a mother.

“I was really inspired by all mothers on tour,” said Osaka prior to the American open semi -final. ‘So I also have the feeling that I am not doing well enough, or I will stay behind … I know that Belinda [Bencic] made the semi -final of Wimbledon [this year]. So I just had the feeling that I lost a race in a strange way. “

Just like Osaka, Anisimova also took time away from tennis.

Anisimova won the US Open Juniors at the age of 15 and beat Gauff in the final, but was overwhelmed by the daily pressure associated with high-level tennis.

She fought against Covid and various injuries and then took a break in the spirit of sport in 2023. A year ago she lost in the qualification of Wimbledon.

Now she is one match of the title.

“Anisimova plays the style that the US Open can win”, ESPN’s Mary Joe Fernandez after her quarter -final victory. “She can beat all remaining players because she has the weapons.”

Anisimova said, “I hope to sleep something last night.”
