Fernando Alonso says that his back injury is at a manageable level to get through and rest the Hungarian Grand Prix -weekend during the summer holidays.

Aston Martin announced that Alonso would be in Budapest on Friday FP1, in which reserve administrator Felipe drugoviched while the Spaniard was given more treatment for a muscle injury. Alonso returned to the car for FP2 and was the fifth fastest behind teammate Lance Stroll, and says it is just a situation that he has to manage all weekend.

“It’s the same as yesterday – it will be the whole weekend,” said Alonso. “I have a small injury on my muscle on my back, in the lumbar area, so I need some rest. But the summer vacation is coming, so it is two days to manage the comfort in the chair. We found different solutions yesterday with air cushions and other things that work well – today I had no pain in FP2, so that’s positive.”

Although Alonso says that it is not unusual to have any discomfort in the car, the injury appeared in a medical scan and confirmed that he should take the time to rest when he gets the chance.

“You always have small pain and discomfort here and there. The thing is that we did the MRI last week to check well and we saw a small injury to the muscle,” he explained. “It is clear that if you are a normal person, you sit a bit for two weeks. But I think it is manageable. I have no pain in the car, which is the most important thing.”

Alonso was encouraged on Friday by the form of Aston Martin in Hungary, given that he was in the top five without being completely happy with his car.

“Of course I missed FP1, but FP2 felt good. The balance may still not be in the window where I would probably like the car,” he said. “A bit understeer in the middle of the corner and struggles to rotate the car at the low speed. But normally for a first exercise of the weekend. Let’s see what we can change from one day to the next and also a few tests that the boys have done in FP1. We have to view the data and post the fastest car tomorrow.”

Stroll was not sure what the team’s strong performance caused on Friday, because he finished FP2 in fourth place and for both Mercedes and Red Bull Cars.

“I felt good today, just a good balance,” said Stroll. “I mean, TimeShets on Friday, it’s always hard to know what everyone does with fuel loads and such. But yes, the car felt good. We will see what we can do tomorrow. It just felt like the car was behaving well today.”
