Ally McCoist predicts Jeremy Frimpong could face six-week layoff after early injury at Liverpool

Liverpool suffered an early blow in Frankfurt when Jeremy Frimpong had to leave the field injured within twenty minutes. Ally McCoist fears that the fast right back will be out for up to six weeks.

The Dutch defender, who joined from Bayer Leverkusen this summer, pulled his hamstrings after a burst on the right and had to be replaced by Conor Bradley despite receiving brief treatment.

Speaking live on TNT Sports, McCoist gave a stark assessment.

“I wonder if he has a little calf muscle or something,” the Scot said, before noticing that Frimpong appeared to be grabbing his right hamstring.

“Well, it depends if it’s a tear or not. I was never fast enough to completely tear mine. So I was always about three or four weeks, but the fast guys can be six.”

Fellow commentator Darren Fletcher added “the general consensus is at least four weeks,” before McCoist’s six-week prediction left supporters fearful of a new fitness problem that Arne Slot would have to solve.

The 24-year-old’s pace has already been a defining feature of our attacking play this season, with his overlapping runs providing vital width when he gets the chance to play.

Without him, the balance on the right side could change dramatically.

It is already the second time this season that the Dutchman has been ruled out due to injury, after he had another problem in August.

Despite the setback, Liverpool went into half-time 3-1 up thanks to goals from Hugo Ekitike, Virgil van Dijk and Ibou Konate, demonstrating the resilience that characterized last season’s title-winning campaign.

However, McCoist’s warning will leave us nervously awaiting confirmation of the full extent of Frimpong’s injury, with tests expected in the coming days.

If the right-back’s dismissal proves to be serious, it could force the boss to reconsider his tactical shape.
