Southampton caretaker boss Tonda Eckert insists he is taking things from game to game, while there are questions about his possible permanent appointment.

Southampton are looking for Will Still’s replacement after he parted ways with the club summer appointment. Still was relieved of his duties after a 2-0 defeat Preston North End last Saturday.

As speculation swirls over the next head coach, caretaker boss Tonda Eckert has overseen a 2-1 win over QPR. It was a much better performance from the Saints, and their German replacement received much praise.

Unsurprisingly, Eckert was asked about the management situation after the match. And with reports stating the U21 boss could be a contender for the permanent gighe was asked about his position on filling the role full-time.

“My job is to prepare for today’s match as best as possible,” he told the George Rees-Julian from Daily Echo. “Preparing Saturday’s match as best as possible. That is where my focus lies.”

Tonda Eckert’s role in Southampton’s management chase

Eckert is playing an intriguing role in Southampton’s search for a new head coach. This is not normally the case for caregiver bosses, but there is a bit of pressure on him to perform.

Not only is the German coach eager to perform to potentially establish himself as a permanent contender, but the Saints also need time to identify their preferred candidate. Strong results from Eckert will buy them more time.

That said, it would be beneficial for the Saints to land their boss in the next two weeks. If Still’s permanent replacement is named during the break, it would give them enough time to settle down and work with the players.

Whether that turns out to be the case remains to be seen. As it stands now, it appears there is no immediate appointment or a top candidate on the agenda.

An important decision for Southampton’s under-pressure leaders

Sport Republic is again under fire from Southampton fans this season. Their regression from a competitive Premier League side to a kind of yo-yo club was a tough task, even for the neutral players.

To get anything out of this season and bring some stability back to St. Mary’s, they need to get this deal right. The investment has been there and the talent is in this team, but they need the right boss to get a tune out of it.

Not only that, but there is something to be said for overhauling off-field structure. Since the departure of key figures like Jason Wilcox, the Saints have felt far removed from the well-oiled machine they once were.

Wiping the slate clean with a new boss could be just what they need to turn their fortunes around.
