Brussels Airport has been closed and all flights have been grounded after the reported sighting of a drone, Belgian air traffic control said.

“There are currently no flights landing or departing,” the spokeswoman said, adding that she could not estimate how long the airport would remain closed.

Flight data on Brussels Airport’s website shows a number of delayed and canceled flights, with FlightRadar24 reporting that some have been diverted. The airport is located 12 kilometers northeast of Brussels and is an important hub for international travel, with flights to Great Britain, Dubai and Turkey, among others.

The last flight that appears to have departed is at 7.30pm to Prague, with the last arrival at the airport at 7.50pm from the Spanish island of Tenerife.

It follows similar closures of Poland’s Lublin Airport in September this year after several Russian drones reportedly crossed into Polish territory, leading to NATO fighter jets being deployed to intercept them.

After the incident, the Polish Army Operational Command reported on

The nature of a possible drone raid is not yet clear.
