Aljamain Sterling walked UFC Shanghai with a victory over Brian Ortega, and he says that an aspect of the fight makes the victory so sweeter.
Sterling went into his five -round matchup against Ortega on Saturday to remain relevant in the Vederweight division. He had not participated since a unanimous loss of decision for Movsar Evloev at the end of 2024. “Funkmaster” was able to withdraw by beating “T-City”. It was a clean sweep for Sterling, who earned score totals from 50-45 across the board.
The former UFC Bantamweight Champion was interviewed at the ESPN+ Post-Fight Show. During his chat, Sterling unveiled an aspect of the fight so that he felt pretty satisfied (via Inappropriate).
“I was happy that I had to show off my striking,” said Sterling. “Guys think I can’t box, they think I can’t kick, they think that my striking is complete. Didy, I fight unorthodox because I like to cause as little damage as possible. These guys come in the fighting, they actually want to go back and forth.
Sterling even got the feeling that Ortega felt uncomfortable in the grab department, and he benefited by eradicating his attack on the ground.
“He didn’t want to struggle even in the grip fairs,” said Sterling. “He wanted to hit me in the face. He landed some big shots of his back. I had something like:” Holy sh*t, this guy has some doll. ” I was not about to let him hit the face all the time, so I just started to open on the floor. “
“Funkmaster” is now looking ahead to what the next step is. He will probably take the number 5 of Ortega on the official UFC rankings of featherweight. Whether it will lead to a no. 1 Competier competition is still to be seen.
