Alexander Volkanovski debunks retirement rumors ahead of UFC 325: ‘Get back out there’

UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski has dismissed rumors of his retirement ahead of UFC 325.

Volkanovski will headline UFC 325 against Diego Lopes on January 31 in Australia in a rematch of their fight from last year. The champion joins the fight as a -164 favorite, while Lopes is a +128 underdog FanDuel.

Heading into the fight there has been a lot of talk that this will be Volkanovski’s last fight, win or lose. However, Volkanovski made it clear that if he won, he would keep fighting.

“If I got beat up, would I come back to fight? No,” Volkanovski said to Ariel Helwani. “But that’s not my plan. Unless things go terribly wrong, I plan on going back. Whether it’s the next one, against an undefeated fighter in the UFC, or something like that, that’s attractive, maybe that could be one I can end up with.”

“Right now I’m planning on everything going well, raising my hand and hopefully taking minimal damage so I can have a quick turnaround. The plan isn’t to retire, so I don’t know where that comes from.”

While many claimed this is a retirement fight for Volkanovski at UFC 325, he said that is not true. Instead, he plans to get at least one more this year before reevaluating his future. But as long as Volkanovski continues to win and perform, he sees no need to retire.

Alexander Volkanovski has his next opponent in his sights after UFC 325

When Volkanovski makes the walk to the Octagon at UFC 325, he will rematch Diego Lopes, who was his last opponent.

However, Volkanovski sees no problem with it as he thinks he will face Lerone Murphy or Movsar Evloev next.

“I know this is still going to be an exciting fight, and I think Lerone Murphy and Movsar might fight. If that’s the case, I’ll just fight the winner,” Volkanovski added.

Volkanovski enters the fight with a 27-4 record and is coming off a decision victory over Lopes.
