Alex Ovechkin climbs into the top 10 of all time with Hat Trick Night

Alex Ovechkin continues to set records and had another fantastic performance on Thursday night. The 40-year-old legend notched his 33rd career hat trick with the Montreal Canadiens, officially passing Joe Sakic and moving into 10th place on the NHL’s all-time points list with 1,643.

Ovechkin scored three goals on three shots and added an assist to take the damage to four points, becoming just the sixth player in league history to record a hat-trick after turning 40. ESPN Insights notes: “Alex Ovechkin is the second player in NHL history with six goals in a four-game span at age 40 or older. Teemu Selanne did it in March 2011.”

He now has six goals in his last four games and seven in his last six. He’s suddenly within four goals of the NHL lead. He has 907 in his career and 10 on the season, with 20 points in 21 games.
