Alex de Minaur has risen the second week in the US Open for the fifth time with a business victory over wounded German Daniel Altmaier.

The last player of Australia who was again recovered, the Minaur recovered from a set to make progress after Altmaier wounded retired when the demon led 6-7 (9-7) 6-3 6-4 2-0 on Saturday 6-7 (Sunday Aest).

Altmaier had fought for more than four hours and saved a match point in an epic triumph on the third round about Stefanos Tsitsipas and fought bravely to make a backup.

But Energieke de Minauraur was a man on a mission and bounced after his oppressed opponent needed two medical time-outs to treat thigh voltage.

Once down two sets to one, Altmaier put down a man to beat and the eighth seed of Australia came in for the kill.

A model of consistency, the Minaur has now made the last 16 on eight of the last nine Grand Slams.

The 26-year-old has a huge opportunity to make the open quarterfinals for the third time when he is confronted with the Swiss qualification Leandro Riedi, the World No 435 in the fourth round.

The Minaur is the only Australian who has been left in the singles after the 15th seed of ladies Daria Kasatkina lost her third round collision with double US open champion Naomi Osaka 6-0 4-6 6-3.

Cheese as an adopted favorite of the New York crowd, the Japanese Osaka has set up a fourth round game with Coco Gauff.

But for Kasatkina, born in Russia, the 15th seed, hoping to reach the fourth round in her 11th crack at the US Open, but in only her third Grand Slam this season under the Australian flag, there was little to cheer after she got a “Bagel” with her 6-0 trouncing in the opening set on Saturday.

Her fighting back to win the second Stanza felt redoutable after she had been completely surpassed early, but in a match that always felt like it was on the more powerful Japanese racket, the four -time big big champion Osaka refunded to take the victory after an hour and 44 minutes at Louis Armstrong stage.
