Alex de Minaur targets Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz – 0-18 and still

Alex de Minaur prepares for the start of the new season in Sydney and leads his country in the United Cup.

World No. 7 discussed one of men’s tennis’ most daunting challenges: finding a way past Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.

The Australian is yet to record a victory against men’s tennis’ dominant duo, who have a combined record of 0-18. It’s another example of how firmly the pair controlled the biggest stages of the sport.

Carlos and Jannik have won the previous eight Major titles. On the other hand, Alex has yet to make it past the quarter-finals of tennis’ most notable scene, while his first chance to change that awaits the home leg of the Australian Open.

With five defeats against Alcaraz and thirteen against Sinner, de Minaur does not want to ignore that issue and focus on beating other rivals. Instead, that terrible record pushed the world number one spot. 7 in a period of honest reassessment.

Instead of accepting the rift, the Sydney native has spent the off-season looking for solutions. Physically he is gaining strength and weight than in previous years.

He believes adding strength and durability to his arsenal are essential elements to survive and threaten the relentless base pressure exerted by the sport’s two standard bearers.

The emphasis was on variety, taking risks and disrupting the rhythm, rather than relying solely on speed and consistency. As his H2H confirms to them, it hasn’t been enough so far.

De Minaur knows that the margins are painfully small. In fact, he missed a huge chance to beat Alcaraz in their first clash in Barcelona in 2022 after squandering match points in a titanic battle.

Fierce duels against the dominant figures strengthen the belief that the breakthrough is not impossible. However, closing the gap requires new weapons and the courage to use them against players who rarely provide openings.

Alex qualified for last month’s ATP Finals in Turin and faced both Carlos and Jannik. He fought well in the opener against the Spaniard and lost it in the tiebreak after a huge battle.

World No. 1 took the lead in the second set and brought home the win. The Aussie still reached the semi-finals and faced Jannik Sinner for the 13th time. The Italian secured a 7-5, 6-2 victory after almost two hours.

Just like against Alcaraz, de Minaur remained competitive in the opening set. World No. 2 stole it with a late break and dominated set number two to remain perfect against his fellow top 10 rival.

“I’ve played some very close games with Carlos and Jannik over the years, and you feel like you’re getting closer and closer. You have to work on your game and find new weapons.

It’s about finding different ways to hurt these players and being willing to take more risks and be a little bit more of a disruptor. There are a few things here and there that we on my team have been working on this season to take the next step.

That is of course the next goal. Ultimately, I’m trying to get bigger and stronger and just keep improving. Over the years I have gained a bit of weight, which has certainly helped me.

There is no substitute for hard work, so that’s what we’re going to do,” said Alex de Minaur.
