Alex de Minaur unleashed a flurry of impressive shotmaking when under pressure at the ABN Amro Open in Rotterdam on Saturday, reaching his third consecutive final at the ATP 500 event.

The Australian saved all ten break points he faced to beat Ugo Humbert 6-4, 6-3 in one hour and 31 minutes, according to Infosys ATP Stats. De Minaur, who finished second in each of the past two editions, is now the first player in tournament history to reach three championship matches in a row.

“I am very proud of the efforts,” said De Minaur, the No. 8 player in the PIF ATP Rankings. “Today again there were a lot of difficult moments, a lot of break points, a lot of tough situations… But I managed to get myself out of it and I’m super excited to be here again in the final and give myself another chance to hopefully win the title.

“It’s difficult to get much rhythm against him [Humbert]. He tries to get the first shot in the rally whenever he can. He’s such a good ball striker and there aren’t that many rallies that go up, so it’s very difficult to find that rhythm and feel comfortable. Not every match you get the chance to be aggressive. Today was one that I certainly wasn’t capable of, but hey, I found a way.”

In the hunt for the long-awaited Rotterdam crown, De Minaur will face former champion Felix Auger-Aliassime or Alexander Bublik in the final on Sunday. The 26-year-old also boosted his form at the ATP 500s, taking his Tour-leading total since the start of the 2023 season at that level to 52 wins.

Although Humbert showed his courage, it was the Australian who proved unshakable in the decisive moments. De Minaur combined ruthless precision with trademark defensive prowess, repeatedly absorbing pressure and forcing errors at key points, especially in a tense second set in which Humbert earned four of his break chances.

With the win, De Minaur improved to 6-2 in his Lexus ATP Head2Head series against the Frenchman. Humbert will next compete in the ATP 500 in Doha, where he opens against Fabian Marozsan.
