The battle for ATP year-end No. 1, presented by PIF Awards, has come down to the season-ending Nitto ATP Finals. Who will finish on top: Carlos Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner?
Both men have claimed the prize once before – Alcaraz in 2022 and Sinner in 2024 – and one will claim the prestigious trophy again.
Alcaraz leads Sinner with 1,050 points in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin. Whoever finishes Turin with more points in the Live Race will become number 1 at the end of the year.
Carlos Alcaraz needs to earn more than 450 points in Turin to guarantee himself number 1 at the end of the year, regardless of what Sinner earns. To do that he can:
• Sweep his round-robin matches.
• Reach the finals and win two round-robin matches or one round-robin match.
Alcaraz said at the media day in Turin on Thursday: “To finish as number 1, it has been an important goal for me for six months, to be honest. Because I didn’t think about it at the beginning.
“I’m just very motivated to perform well, play my best tennis, get some wins here and qualify for the semi-finals.
“I think doing well in this tournament, winning games here, goes hand in hand with finishing the year as No. 1. It’s kind of the same motivation: they stay together.”
To have any chance of finishing at No. 1 at the end of the year, Sinner must win the title. There are several permutations of how he can achieve this.
If Alcaraz wins 0 matches in Turin, Sinner:
• Must win the title while winning at least one round robin match.
If Alcaraz wins one round-robin match in Turin and does not reach the final, Sinner must:
• Win at least two round-robin matches
• Continue to win the title
If Alcaraz wins 2 matches in Turin and does not reach the final, Sinner must:
• Win the title as an undefeated champion
“With the early departure of Carlos in Paris there are some scenarios that I am following, but at the same time there is no chance if he plays very well, no matter what my result is,” Sinner said.
The 2025 Nitto ATP Finals start on Sunday in Turin.
