The leg injury suffered by Carlos Alcaraz in his Nitto ATP Finals loss to Jannik Sinner will sideline the Spaniard in this week’s Davis Cup competition.
Alcaraz announced this on Tuesday morning via social media.
“I am very sorry to announce that I will not be able to play with Spain in the Davis Cup in Bologna,” Alcaraz wrote on Twitter. “I have edema in my right hamstring and the medical advice is not to compete. I have always said that playing for Spain is the best thing there is and I was really looking forward to helping fight for the Salad Bowl [trophy]. I’m going home injured…’
The Davis Cup final take place from Tuesday to Sunday. Spain’s quarter-final against the Czech Republic is scheduled for Thursday, and Alcaraz’s team are certainly underdogs without him on the pitch. A selection of Jaume Munar, Pedro Martinez and Pablo Carreno Busta faces a Czech team with Jiri Lehecka, Jakub Mensik and Tomas Machac.
Two-time defending champion Italy is without Sinner, but is still among the favorites with Flavio Cobolli, Lorenzo Sonego, Matteo Berrettini and the doubles duo Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori.
Alcaraz ends his year at number 1 in the world. His match record of 71-9 included eight titles, including two Grand Slams at the French Open and US Open.
