Alcaraz destroys injuries concern with Tokyo Win

Carlos Alcaraz caused injuries to the Kinoshita Group Japan Open Tennis Championships on Saturday, where he moved past Belgian Zizou Bergs 6-4, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals in Tokyo.

The Spaniard Twakte are ankle during his opening round victory against Sebastian Baez, but moved free during his first Lexus ATP Head2head collision against Bergs to go after 79 minutes at the ATP 500 Hard-Court event.

Alcaraz hit Bergs with his forehand, was sharp around the net and recovered from waste breaking benefits in both sets to improve up to 64-7 in the season, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index.

Alcaraz achieved a career-best 65 tour level victories in 2023 and will match that count with a victory against the US Brandon Nakashima in the quarterfinals. Nakashima defeated Marton Fucsovics 7-5, 6-3 to achieve his 30th victory of 2025.

The best seed is chasing a Tour-Tooning eighth title of the season and arrived in a self-assured mood in Tokyo after winning his sixth major at the US Open earlier this month. With his last victory against Jannik Sinner in New York, the Spaniard also won the first place in the PIF ATP ranking list of the Italian. Alcaraz leads Sinner with 2,590 points in the PIF ATP Live Race to Turin, which acts as a barometer for ATP at the end of the year 1 presented by Pif Honors.

Previously, Holger Rune wasted little time to reach his fifth quarterfinals of the season and the American Ethan Quinn fell 6-4, 6-2. The third placed Dane went to the last four in Tokyo in 2024 and will want to match when he met Jenson Brooksby in the quarters. Brooksby defeated Luciano Darderi 7-6 (7), 6-1.

Rune is looking for his second title of the season, after triumphing during the ATP 500 event at Clay in Barcelona. The 22-year-old is 14th in the PIF ATP Live Race to Turin, more than 1000 points behind the eighth placed Alex de Minaur, who takes the final qualifying place for the Nitto ATP Finals.

“I really tightened my focus at the start of the sets,” said Rune. “I tried to hit quickly, it makes me more comfortable. He is a good player and has some weapons, but it was about trying to take them from him and play on my conditions and start quickly, made me better and made me more relaxed.”
