Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has confronted with questions about the presence of the former Victorian Prime Minister Daniel Andrews in the Chinese Military Parade, who has taken criticism from the federal opposition and a former state leader.
Criticism was also focused on the former NSW Prime Minister and Federal Labor -Minister Bob Carr, who was initially supposed to attend the Parade that was 80 years old since Japan’s defeat at the end of the Second World War.
Carr later told nine newspapers that he would not attend what he described as a “Soviet style” parade, and said that instead he would attend individual indoor events and tackle Chinese think tanks for foreign policy.
Wednesday’s event was the largest military parade of China ever, with tanks, state-of-the-art planes and perfectly synchronized troops that fill the streets of Beijing, which marked a show of the growing firepower of China and geopolitical influence.

At the red carpet of the event, Andrews was depicted by the hand of Chinese President Xi Jinping. He later posed in a group photo with XI, as well as Russian President Vladimir Putin and the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

On Wednesday morning, the federal opposition wanted to make the decision to participate as a token of a bad judgment.

“I think they should explain for those two individuals why they attend a military parade that Vladimir Putin attends and what that actually tells the world,” said opposition leader Sussan Ley before Carr confirmed that he would not be present.
Spokesperson Andrew Hastie of the Opposition Thuis described the event as a “parade for dictators” and a “celebration of the Chinese Communist Party”.
Albanian was asked what he thought of Andrews – who is on a personal capacity – at an event with Putin and Kim.
“He doesn’t meet them,” Albanian told reporters.

Asked what he thought that Andrews was perhaps the most controversial Australian during the event, said Albanian: “We will send a diplomat, we will be there.”

The ambassador of Australia in China was not present.

The last time Australia sent a representative to the 70th anniversary of the end of the war in 2015, when the then Prime Minister Tony Abbott chose Minister Michael Ronaldson, said Albanian.
Also interviewed about the issue was former Queensland Labor -Prime Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk. She told Sky News on Wednesday that if she was, “it would be a clear no”.
“I respect, I respect Bob, but I think they just gone the next level,” she said, before Carr confirmed that he would not attend the parade.
“Go there for a holiday, do your business lectures, but it is not necessary to attend this military parade.”

SBS News has contacted Andrews for comments.

Victoria’s government minister, Vicki Ward, defended the presence of Andrews at the Parade and pointed to the importance of diplomatic ties.
“He goes like a private person. These are the choices he made in a private head,” she said reporters.
“It is important that we maintain good, healthy relationships with those countries that are in our region.
“That we as a government ensure the interests of this state, whether it is economic or whether it is social.”
Andrews traveled to China seven times as Prime Minister and set up criticism for his last trip in 2023 when he refused to allow the press to accompany him.
The government of Andrews had also registered for the controversial belt and road Initiative agreement of China for the then Minister of Federal Coalition, Marise Payne, canceled it.
Australia’s relationship with China has been considerably thawed since Labor Federal has taken over power.
But Albanian continued to support the American relationship.
