Alan Shearer has picked the eleven players who impressed him most in last weekend’s top-flight matches.
The player turned pundit and named his Premier League team of the week.
The NUFC legend included two players who stood out in the Newcastle 2 Manchester City 1 match.
A great performance and a deserved win, with United well worth the win and having quite a few more great chances to score more than the two they got.
The Alan Shearer Premier League team of the week:
Jordan Pickford (Everton)
“Took command of his penalty area and made several big saves, including two excellent stops to deny Zirkzee. He simply refused to be beaten.”
Malick Thiaw (Newcastle United)
“Was solid all night, giving away very little and producing a dominant performance at center back against one of the best strikers in the world in Erling Haaland.”
Murillo (Nottingham Forest)
“He scored a fantastic goal to put Forest ahead and was imperious at the heart of the defense in an incredible and fully deserved 3-0 win over Liverpool.”
Michael Keane (Everton)
“It would have been easy to be distracted after the Idrissa Gueye incident, but he stood tall and nothing could get past him, despite Everton playing with one man down for almost the entire match.”
Elliot Anderson (Nottingham Forest)
“Easily the best midfielder on the pitch. Liverpool couldn’t get near him. He dominated the middle of the park with his excellent passing and vision.”
Morgan Rogers (Aston Villa)
“He made the difference in Villa’s comeback win against Leeds. Two excellent goals, including a sensational free-kick that won the match.”
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (Everton)
“They put in an excellent shift to relieve the pressure on Everton’s backline and capped off a wonderful performance with a brilliant goal that fittingly won the match.”
Eberechi Eze (Arsenal)
“He played the match and was electric around the edge of the penalty area and scored a brilliant hat-trick in the 4-1 North London derby win. It’s the kind of moment he would have dreamed of when he joined Arsenal.”
Pedro Neto (Chelsea)
“Too good for Burnley with his pace and skill. A strong performance was capped by a quality header.”
Callum Wilson (West Ham United)
“He scored two excellent goals and led the line very well. West Ham missed his presence up top when he was sent off early in the second half as they lost their 2-0 lead.”
Harvey Barnes (Newcastle)
“Two brilliant finishes and he should have scored another. He showed great energy and attitude, which epitomized Newcastle’s performance against Manchester City.”
Manager: Sean Dyche (Nottingham Forest)
“What an impact he has had since joining Forest at the end of October. They look so much more organised, confident and threatening, as they showed in their brilliant win at Anfield.”
My thoughts
I can’t argue with either of Alan Shearer’s Newcastle United choices.
So many candidates in black and white, Bruno Guimaraes excellent and key to both goals, while returning full-backs Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall were excellent.
