Alan Shearer has given his verdict on Newcastle 2 Chelsea 2.
The United legend reacts to what he saw at St James’ Park on Saturday.
Talking about The Rest is Football, explains Alan Shearer; “Newcastle United Chelsea were absolutely battered in the first half. Chelsea looked like they didn’t know what hit them.”
Newcastle United fan says Eddie Howe’s side; “We were all over Chelsea, they didn’t let them play.”
Alan Shearer believes; “I think Newcastle’s performance in the first half was the best I’ve seen from them this season and I found everything that was missing against Sunderland: the aggression, the energy and the pace.”
The fact that Eddie Howe now has both summer signings fit to play up front was a big factor I think. Nick Wolte made sure he could pack so much into the opening 70 minutes, knowing that Yoane Wissa was then available to come off the bench and keep that intensity going.
Gary Lineker added: “Newcastle United recovered well from that result [against Sunderland]because they got the good win against Fulham in midweek, in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup, defending your trophy, Alan. And I think they probably should have won that game [against Chelsea]. Especially the way they played in the first half.”
Alan Shearer points correctly; “I thought Newcastle had enough chances [to win the match].
However, the former number nine also makes it clear what danger lies in not being four or five goals ahead, as Newcastle United could and should have done.
Goals change games and that’s what happened when Reece James scored the free kick just after half-time; “Newcastle were brilliant in the first half and deserved their 2-0 lead, but if you ever needed an example of goal-changing games, that piece of brilliance from Reece James, the free kick, completely changed the situation.”
He’s not wrong, although Aaron Ramsdale should never have been beaten by that free-kick from over thirty yards out, no matter how well placed James was he always went for that spot.
It is clear that the appalling match officials who denied Newcastle United so many clear and obvious decisions simply rubbed salt in the wounds of United players who failed to take so many risks.
