In the films, Tony Stark Jarvis is the ultimate AI assistant, managing schemes, performing simulations, controlling environments and anticipatory needs before being expressed. In reality, today’s AI agents are still far from that vision. Although 2025 is announced as the year of Agentic AI, the first offer of major players have been overwhelming. They can perform tasks, but they remain far removed from the seamless, hyper-intelligent assistants that we introduced.
In this episode, Dr. Robert “Bobby” Blumofe, CTO at Akamai Technologies, accompanies me to investigate what AI AI assistants really stops and what is needed to build one that is capable of a top human executive assistant. Bobby argues that the jump forward will not come from haunting ever larger models, but of optimization, efficiency and integration of AI with the right tools, infrastructure and processes. He believes that breakthroughs in model efficiency, such as those in Deepseek, can make capable agents affordable and viable for daily use.
We break down the spectrum of AI agents, from simple, task-specific helpers to the fully autonomous, general vision of jarvis. Bobby shares why many of the most valuable enterprise applications come from the middle, where agents are semi-autonomous, task-oriented and integrated with other reliability systems. He also explains why smaller, specialized models often perform better than “ask everything” LLMs for specific business use, reducing costs, latency and security risks.
The conversation deals with the role of Akamai in enabling low latency, scalable AI on the edge, the importance of combining neural and symbolic AI to achieve reliable reasoning and planning, and a realistic timeline of five to seven years for assistants who can equal the best human EAS. We also look at the technical, social and business challenges that are ahead, from too much dependence on LLMS to the ethics of deploying very capable agents on a scale.
This is a well-founded, future-oriented discussion about the future of AI assistants, where they are today, why they fall short, and the practical steps needed to make fiction in reality.
