Seven News Special 7News: The Balibo Five: 50 years later Commemorates the death of seven and nine journalists Greg Shackleton, Tony Stewart, Gary Cunningham, Malcolm Rennie and Brian Peters, who were killed by Indonesian troops in 1975.

Reporter Nick McCallum travels to East Timor to mark the birthday of the death of five young television reports and crew members caught in the cross -fire of a clandestine invasion.

It contains exclusive interviews with the families of the journalists, East Timor president José Ramos-Horta and experts who reveal how the Australian government knew what would come and chose to remain silent.


Evan Shackleton (above), son of Greg Shackleton, said: “I have an overwhelming pride for all those men who did their work and took a decision to know that there were sailing to complete the job for which they were sent, who was the truth.”

Nick McCallum visits the house where the journalists spent their last night and speaks with those who have changed tragedy in Legacy.

He said: “In the house where the Balibo five spent their last night, you can’t help but feel the weight of what happened here. It is now quiet, but the echoes of that day are stuck.

“We have had the privilege of talking to the families, some for the first time in decades, and to hear their reflections on what righteousness and inheritance today mean.”
