The Boeing 787 aircraft from Air India, which crashed in Ahmedabad on Thursday, was insured for around $ 120 million, according to sources of the aviation industry.
Airlines take insurance policies to cover against damage to an aircraft due to accident, incident or wars. There is a separate coverage for passenger and third-party obligations and that would be activated after the crash.
Air India had completed an $ 20 billion insurance cover for his fleet and this came into effect from April. Tata AIG is the main insurer and takes a significant part of the risk. Indian insurance companies in the public sector and Icici Lombard have a smaller part of the insured sum. The entire risk was endorsed by reinsurers established in London.
Air India did not immediately respond to an e -mailquery.
As a first step, insurance researchers will visit the site and assess the damage. They will also collect details from the airline to help insurers understand what the crash has caused. Although the airline is expected to receive full claims according to the Hull loss policy, passengers on board the aircraft receive compensation according to the provisions of the Montreal Convention. This proposes minimal limits for compensation that an airline would have to pay to wounded and the relatives of the deceased.
“Although the trunk component is easy to find out, it is too early to determine the overall liability (passengers and third party) on the operator because of this crash,” said Hitesh Girotra, vice-president (aviation and specialist lines), cautious insurance brokers.
